Ollie Imogene (Jean Shepard) Birchfield, age 82 of Hendersonville passed away early Sunday Morning.

She was born on November 21, 1933 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. She was one of ten children that helped on the family farm. When she was just eleven years old her family moved to Visalia, California, about 100 miles north of Bakersfield.

From an early age, she started singing with her siblings at church on Sunday. It became such a passion that during high school she and four other young ladies formed a band called “The Melody Ranch Girls” playing gigs around town.

In 1952, she had the opportunity to sing with Hank Thompson during a concert that was near her home. He was so impressed that several months later after hard work on both their parts Ms. Shepard was signed to Capitol Records.

Ms. Shepard had a rough start with her singing career, with there being only a few solo female artists at that time. It wasn’t until she recorded a duet with Ferlin Husky, “A Dear John Letter” that things started to change. The song would spend six weeks atop the country charts and hit No. 4 on the pop charts. It was the only No. 1 song of her career however it sold more than one million records.

She teamed up with Ferlin Husky and would begin learning many invaluable lessons about the country music industry. In November of 1955, at the age of just 22 she was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. She would join Kitty Wells and Minnie Pearl being the only women at the time that were Members of the Grand Ole Opry.

She met her first husband, Hawkshaw Hawkins, during her time on the “Ozark Jubilee” program. They started touring together and in November of 1960 married on the stage of a Wichita, Kansas auditorium. The couple welcomed their first son, Don Robins in 1963 and where expecting their second child the late spring of 1963 when Hawkins plane crashed and left her eight months pregnant and raising a toddler. Just weeks after the death of Hawkins, she gave birth to Harold Franklin Hawkins II.

In 1968 she married musician Benny Birchfield and would welcome her third son, Corey Birchfield just a year later.

In the early 1970s, she made the move from Capitol Records to United Artists, where she remained until 1977. She released her last single “Too Many Rivers,” in 1981 and was known throughout her career as an outspoken opponent of pop-country music.

Ms. Shepard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011. At the press conference announcing that year's inductees, Hall of Famer Brenda Lee said that this induction was “way too long in coming. She busted down the doors.”

On Nov. 21, 2015, the Grand Ole Opry celebrated Jean Shepard’s 60th anniversary as a member; she was the only female member to have reached the six-decade mark. Shepard is the longest-running member of the Opry at this time, and had appeared on the show into her 80s. She was also a published author, having released her engaging memoir, “Down Through the Years,” in 2014.

Shepard will forever be remembered as a pioneer for women in country music. Her 1956 LP, “Songs of a Love Affair,” featuring songs about a marriage broken up by adultery, was one of the genre's first concept albums, and other gutsy, forthright recordings such as “Act Like a Married Man” helped to pave the way for artists like Loretta Lynn.

Shepard leaves behind Benny Birchfield, her devoted husband of nearly 50 years, three sons and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held Friday September 30, 2016 at 1pm in the chapel of Hendersonville Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Hendersonville Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held on Thursday September 29, 2016 from 12pm-8pm and on Friday September 30, 2016 from 11am-1pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home 353 E Main St Hendersonville, TN 37075 615-824-3855

Jean was and is a huge influence in my music, and I listened to her music ever since I was a little tyke… old enough to remember. I am heartbroken at the loss of this great lady. She was always so very straightforward, she would shoot straight from the hip, no-holds-barred, yet she was always very kind to me. I loved her to pieces and probably always will.
Rest In Peace Jean. You are missed greatly. <3

Jean was outspoken in all the right ways concerning the changes in Country music, out spoken with a truth and love of the genre, so close to all the hearts that loved the development to a truly international and commercial vehicle, from the hayseed to the utterly acceptable hit parade songs of the 50s and 60s. Her deep love of the material, songwriters and performers, conveying melody to a standard that is lacking today was always evident. With a voice as clear as crystal, recognised instantly, she has left a mark like no other. I loved her outspokenness, because she cared about the genre,
Jean, you were fortunate to not be afraid to say what you feel, always conveying the wishes of millions. Heaven is now your home.

Sending our prayers and thoughts to the family and friends of this marvelous and well-loved woman, Ms. Jean Shepard. We had the pleasure of meeting her several years ago and always looked forward to seeing her at events. She was one of the most outspoken individuals against new country and a stalwart on traditional country music. We will miss her, and never forget her or her contributions to the true art of traditional country. God bless…and go sing high on that mountain with all those who will surely welcome you on the other side.

RIP Jean. May God comfort Benny and her boys in this time of sorrow. I know she is in a better place, but i know it also breaks the hearts of a lot of people. I had several chances to meet her. My husband toured with her for over a decade. He has so many memories of her. She always took care of him when they were on the road. She always called him Jim
( sometimes other names). They always celebrated their birthdays together when they were on the road. I think (Jim)almost thought as much of her as he did him Mom. I will forever be thankful for the memories he has with her and the ones that i have of her. Her songs are so beautiful. RIP beautiful lady.

    Till we meet again!!!!!

Being a country drummer from S/W Oklahoma,I grew up with Jeans 45,s on the old RCA Console. And knowing the Oldhams and Moyers [Jeans Ardmore Oklahoma family]. It was a thrill for me when I moved to Nashville to get to meet Jean. And then an honor to share the bill with her at a package show outside Macon Ga, I was with Billy Joe Royal. But I got to play play behind her on stage and see those trade mark ‘1 4 5 fingers’ behind her back. LeRoy Van Dyke, Rex Allen Jr, Jimmy Fortune, Tommy Cash, BJR and Ms Jean Shepard. I was impressed with Jeans ‘old pro, just plain folks’ attitude and when she learned I knew her kin, Then I was home folks to her…

I have loved Ms. Jean Shepard all my life. I remember as a child helping my grandmother around the house and hearing Jean Shepard playing on the radio. I made it to Nashville to see Jean on the opry only three years ago it took me along time to get there but I am so happy that I did. I will never forget her stepping out on that big stage and filling it with her voice. A piece of me has passed away as well. So thankful my grandmother was a fan of Jean Shepard and passed her love on to me. I hope the family can fined peace in knowing how much Jean Shepard give to her fans.

My eyes are wet and tears are streaming down my face. I heard you were ill, but never thought it would take you from us. There are two things that stand out in my memory as I write this, yet neither has to do with your beautiful voice and songs. The first is….when you stood to sing, your grace and poise were always present, but the thing that captured my eye the most were your hands, they were always placed behind your back and usually with a hankie in them. The next was a documentary about the plane crash where your husband, Hawkshaw Hawkins was killed. You stated that through all the publicity and hype, that the reporters seemed to have forgotten that there were other people on the plane than Patsy Cline. My heart went out to you because your husband was on that flight and yet, very few words were written, reported, nor many condolences given for you and your children. Yet through it all, you were the epitome of grace, kindness and a real classy Lady, from then on I tried my damnedest(sp?) to be like you. I’m sorry the opportunity never arose where I could have told you that you are my Hero…… I love you and I will miss you but I have the records to keep you with me. Thank you for devoting your life to TRUE country music. Godspeed, my friend…..xoxo Sarah Ahring

As a promoter, our family did 14 shows called Butterfly Stew, with her in the Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin area. What fond memories of a classy lady. How she was upset that Donna Douglas had top billing at the Mason City Iowa, show at the fairgrounds. I said to her, “I can’t help what the fairgrounds did on the sign, but you are the one closing the show!” She came to me later and apologized ; she said that a Christian lady should not have complained. When I fired the sound company at Sioux City? It didn’t phase her. We had a better show after the firing. Benny said it sounded better after the sound company left.
When I first met her at the Holiday Inn, she was wearing a sweatshirt and baggy pants but when she took the stage she glowed! “Have to give em what they paid to see,” she would say. She didn’t put down the other acts or backup band even when she had good reason to do so. She was a class act that always was a lady on and off the stage. May God rest His hands on her family’s shoulders.

From way way up here in Vancouver BC Canada my condolences to Benny and the boys. My condolences also go out to Jan Howard as this must be very sad for her as well. I personally, think Jean sang better and better as she got older her voice only improved even in her 70’s she was rich and melodic something that few artists achieve, because when it is true talent is truly remains! She was straight forward and would tell it “like it is” no matter the consequences. They don’t make them like that anymore, because the world seem to lack the courage Jean had. Small but mighty! She wasn’t worried about hosting a show or other ways to make money, she was concerned for a particular genre and the preservation of it. Very noble! I always had great respect for that quality in Jean. She will be truly missed.

To Uncle Benny, Donny, Harold and Corey,

May God Bless your during this difficult time!

I’ve shed many tears over the last few days thinking about Aunt Ima. Not only was she a Country Music Icon that will be forever missed, but she was also an Icon as a loving and caring Aunt. I have so many wonderful memories of her over the years while growing up as well as wonderful memories of Grandma and Grandpa Shepard and all the rest of my Aunt’s, Uncles and Cousins.

I’m so glad that my wife Peggy and two daughters, Brittany & Brooke had the opportunity several years ago to spend time with Aunt Ima when we visited Tennessee. It was great for them to finally meet and spend time with her especially after all the years of them hearing me talk about her and knowing how much I adored her.

God’s Choir just got a lot better and it makes me happy to know she’s in a very special place. She touched so many people all over the world and I’m so very proud to have been one of her Nephews. I will never forget her and the Precious Memories of her will live on in my heart forever.

    Love you guys!

I loved Jean Shepard. I am 74 years old so I have been listening to Jean a long time. She and Kitty paved the way for all female country singers. Loved how she spoke up for what was right and what was wrong. I wish her memorial should have been at the Ryman where she graced that stage so many times. I loved her on the Country Family Reunion. I just bought her book and read it last week. It was great reading all the stories. Even though she held a place in her heart for Hawkshaw, she was able to go on with the love of her life, Benny Birchfield. Married almost 50 years is an awesome legacy and she loved her 3 boys and all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I am so glad she was inducted into the Hall of Fame before her death. She knew a lot of the greats have been overlooked and I pray this can be corrected.I salute you Jean Shepard. You will always be remembered as one of the greatest country music singers. My only regret is not seeing you in person. God bless and I love you. God’s choir just got a lot better.
