Arthur “Art” Francis Sakowicz, son of the late Leo Sakowicz and Anna “Angie” Sakowicz, was born on June 2nd, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. After moving to Battle Creek, MI with his family as a young boy, Art attended Battle Creek Central High School where he became a standout athlete, earning all-conference honors in football and baseball. He was scouted by the Detroit Tigers his Senior year for his outstanding contributions.
Following his high school career, Art served in the Air National Guard and spent time in El Paso, Texas and Michigan with his unit. Upon his honorable discharge, he began what would be a life-long career in Sales. One of his favorite positions was when he managed the Redwood and Ross Clothing Store in Ann Arbor, MI. It was here that he helped many of the players and coaching staff of his beloved Michigan Wolverines look their best. His time in Ann Arbor took a couple of interesting twists. One being he co-founded a travel company with some of his friends that offered chartered flights to students and all fans alike to major sporting events around the country. The second, and the most important, he met the love of his life, Becky.
Art and Becky were married on September 22nd,1973 and were so happy to have celebrated their 50th anniversary last fall. The two had three sons, Dan, Greg and Jeff. Art eventually moved the family back to the Chicagoland area, and continued his remarkable sales career. If asked, Art would tell you that some of his best memories were spent with his family traveling and camping across the country. Although they had many adventures together, one tradition that he was particularly fond of is when they all would spend the 4th of July at Lake Charlevoix, MI.
When Art wasn’t spending time with Becky and his boys, he enjoyed taking fishing trips, playing golf, and watching the CUBS play ball. He loved classic movies and talking about cars, and was a train enthusiast. And one thing is for sure, he would never miss watching a Michigan football game. He was a tried and true Wolverine – GO BLUE!
