Betty Pollard Powell

March 25, 1934 – July 4, 2025

Betty Pollard Powell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025, in Hendersonville, Tennessee, at the age of 91.

Born in Gastonia, North Carolina, on March 25, 1934, to parents Catherine and Archie Pollard, Betty spent the early part of her life in Gastonia before moving with her family to Starr, South Carolina, where she attended high school. After graduation, she married James Thurman Powell, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, faith, and devotion.

Betty often spoke of Gastonia with deep affection, remembering it as a wonderful place to grow up—safe, vibrant, and welcoming. The town left a lasting impression on her, shaping her early values and her enduring sense of possibility.

She went on to build a distinguished 36-year career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In her long-held leadership role in management analysis, Betty’s intelligence, integrity, and steady hand contributed meaningfully to the efficiency and success of the organization. Her colleagues held deep respect for her professionalism and unwavering commitment to public service.

Outside of work, Betty was known for her warm spirit, sense of humor, and competitive nature. She was an avid golfer and card player who enjoyed friendly games and shared laughter with family and friends. For the last forty years of her life, Bluegrass Yacht and Country Club became a beloved part of her routine—both on the course and around the table. She relished her time on the greens and cherished meals with loved ones afterward and on special occasions.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, Betty served on the Personnel Committee and shared her love of teaching as a Vacation Bible School volunteer. A true Southern woman in every sense, Betty embodied quiet strength, dignity, and grace. She led with warmth and kindness, carried herself with poise, and held fast to her values of faith, family, and service. Her quiet acts of service and kindness were constant and deeply meaningful. She will be remembered for the grace with which she lived her life.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Thurman Powell. She is survived by her loving daughter, Sherrill P. Olson, and son-in-law, Mark Olson, of Fairhope, Alabama; two grandchildren, Aaron Olson of West Palm Beach, Florida (and his wife, Marsha), and Jordan Marcus of Lake Forest, Illinois (and her husband, Zachery); and two great-grandchildren, Mason and Reese Marcus. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Tidsworth of Greenville, South Carolina (and her husband, Floyd); a niece, Joy Sturgis of Greenville; and a nephew, Jay Clark of Simpsonville, South Carolina.

A private ceremony will be held at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to a charity of your choice in Betty’s honor.
