David Ellsworth Hughes, 90, passed away peacefully on Jan. 23, 2023, with family at his bedside.
Dave was born June 8, 1932, in Nashville, TN, to Fleming Hughes and Emma Hughes Mott.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Glenda “Susie” Hughes of Hendersonville, TN; sons David (Deannie) Hughes of Bethpage, TN; Larry (Mollie) Hughes of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren Erin (Luke) Muncie of Fairhope, AL; Matthew (Kacie) Hughes of Portland, TN; Nathan Hughes of Orange Beach, AL; Alex Jay “AJ” (Hannah) Hughes of Hartsville, TN; Carson (Christian) Hughes of Cleveland, TN; step-grandsons Ryland and Beckton Doll of Raleigh, NC; brother-in law Allen (Myrna) Henson of Kiln, MS; niece Angela (David) Owen of Franklin, TN; nephew Chris (Trish) Henson of Franklin, TN; and great-grandson Daxton Hughes of Fairhope, AL.
Dave was a graduate of Duncan Preparatory School in Nashville and attended Vanderbilt University and Middle Tennessee State University. He proudly served in the United State Navy on board the USS Yorktown during the Korean Conflict. He was a proud member of the Hendersonville Masonic Lodge Number 359 for over 50 years. He and Glenda resided in Hendersonville the past 55 years – their nightly ritual was counting the deer traveling through their yard.
An avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman, Dave’s passion spilled over into his post-military career as a salesman of sporting goods and boats for more than five decades. Dave was inducted into The Legends of the Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2021. He never missed a chance to tell a hunting story or give advice to his sons about fishing.
Many heartfelt thanks to the passionate caregivers on the 200 Hall of the NHC Place Summer in Gallatin, TN. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Dave’s memory.
