David C. Melbye, 86, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, April 19, 2026, from complications after a stroke, surrounded by friends and family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Carol Melbye(nee Brueckner).
Born on April 16, 1940 to Clarence and Mildred Melbye, Dave was a lifelong resident of Wisconsin, relocating to Tennessee in 2021 to be closer to family. He is survived by three sons, David (Julie), Randy (June) and Eric (Peggy), 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Dave was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1958 to 1962. Upon discharge, he relocated to Milwaukee, WI working as a machinist and shop floor supervisor until his retirement in 1998. He and Carol then moved to Reedsburg, WI, where they enjoyed traveling, bird watching and gardening, and spending time with family and their beloved Black Labrador “Buddy”. Dave enjoyed the outdoors and was especially fond of long drives through the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains. When not traveling or working around the house, Dave enjoyed reading, playing cards, listening to country music, and watching old Western movies. He was also an avid sports fan, following the Packers, Bucks and Brewers and NASCAR racing.
From July, 2022 until his death, he resided at Vitality Assisted Living in Hendersonville, TN, where was actively involved in the community, continuing his love of gardening and organizing many resident activities.
Dave will be remembered as an opinionated man with a stubborn streak who enjoyed a good argument over a cold beer. Underneath that sometimes gruff exterior was a man who cared deeply about those closest to him, with a noticeable soft spot for children and dogs. He was loved as a father, husband and friend, and will be deeply missed.
