Ilene Hooper Cowden, a beloved member of her community, passed away on January 25, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on October 13, 1941, in McEwen, Tennessee, Ilene lived a life full of love, adventure, and service.

Ilene began her career as a registered nurse after graduating from Mid-State Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. She later chose to stay home to raise her family before returning to work as an occupational nurse. She dedicated over twenty years of her professional life to Metro Water before retiring.

Her passion for life was evident in her many hobbies and interests. Ilene cherished the outdoors and had a special love for the beach. She was an adventurer at heart, enjoying travel throughout her life. One of her most memorable adventures included two trips to the Holy Lands. In her 40s, she took up skiing in the Swiss Alps, showcasing her zest for new experiences.

Ilene was known for her warm personality and ability to uplift others. Friends and family fondly called her "Momma Bunko" for her role in organizing the Thursday Night Bunko Group, where laughter and joy were always abundant. She was also a long-standing member of the Bluegrass Country Club, participating in both golf and tennis leagues. A dedicated fan, she loved cheering on the Tennessee Volunteers and the Titans.

Ilene was actively involved in the Sanctuary Choir at First Baptist Hendersonville and participated in Sunday School classes for many years. Moreover, she was a founding member of the Woman's Club of Hendersonville, contributing significantly to her community.

In her life, Ilene accomplished many things that she held dear, including participating in mission programs that took her to Venezuela, Mexico, and Brazil—experiences she felt were the fulfillment of a life-long dream. Additionally, she served as a member of the Army Reserves and was honored as a Reserve Commission Officer of the Army.

As the oldest of four sisters, Ilene is preceded in death by her younger sister, Shelia Meredith. She is also preceded by her loving husband, Dr. Charles Marshall Cowden who nicknamed her “his Puddin”.

Ilene is survived by her sisters, Wanda Hethcoat and Renee Hooper; brother-in-law, Eric Meredith; her daughter, Donna Miller; her son, Frederick C.
