James "Jim" Coss

James “Jim” Horace Coss, age 87, passed away on September 1, 2026. He was born on November 3, 1938, in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late Horace and Ruby Coss. Jim attended East High School in Nashville.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1967, including his time stationed in Greenland. Following his military service, he built a successful career and owned and operated Jim Coss A/C & Heating for many years.

Jim was a man who found joy in the simple things in life, especially spending time outdoors and making memories with the people he loved. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, and he was a devoted Atlanta Braves baseball fan. Above all, “The Farm” was his favorite place to be.

Some of Jim’s fondest memories were made camping at Cordell Hull Lake on most summer weekends with “the crew” and his family. He and his beloved wife, Linda, shared a love of the outdoors and enjoyed visiting many of the state parks together, as well as hunting and fishing. Jim never lost his sense of adventure, even later in life. One of his proudest accomplishments was completing a difficult zipline at the age of 80—a testament to his determination and adventurous spirit.

Jim shared 47 years of marriage with Linda B. Coss before her passing in 2020. Their life together was filled with family, adventure, and countless memories that will be treasured by those who knew and loved them.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Linda B. Coss, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Baker.

He leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory in their hearts, including his daughter, Melanie Given (Kyle); grandchildren, Drew Given and Nick Given (Megan); great-grandchildren, Madilyn Given and Camden Given; and his beloved sister and caretaker, Linda F. Coss.

Jim will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his adventurous spirit, his devotion to his family, and the many wonderful memories he created throughout his life. His legacy will live on through the family he loved so dearly and the stories they will continue to share.
