James "Jim" Richards, a devoted family man, proud Army veteran, and beloved member of his community, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026. Born on April 16, 1947, Jim’s life was marked by dedication, service, and a spirit that endeared him to many.

Jim graduated from East Nashville High School in the Class of 1966, a milestone that heralded the beginning of a life filled with commitment and hard work. Soon after, he answered the call of duty with great honor, serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. From 1967 to 1968, he served in Vietnam, followed by a distinguished period stationed in Germany from 1969 to 1987, and later at Fort Hood, Texas, until his retirement in 1987 as a Staff Sergeant. His 21 years of service exemplify a steadfast dedication to his country, a legacy he carried with pride as an active member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 240 in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

After his military career, Jim continued to serve his community through his work as a janitor, first at Madison Church of Christ and then for 14 years at First Methodist Church in Hendersonville. In these roles, he quietly contributed to the daily workings of these beloved churches, embodying a spirit of humility and diligence.

Jim also served several years at Hendersonville Funeral Home as a funeral assistant.

Those who knew Jim well remember him as stubborn with a warm sense of humor. His interests were diverse and heartfelt; he loved to bowl, was moved deeply by gospel music, enjoyed fishing when his health allowed, and found joy and relaxation in crossword puzzles and coloring.

Above all, Jim took immense pride in his family, which he regarded as his greatest accomplishment. He was a loving husband to Anita Richards for 35 years and a devoted father to his children Sheryl “Sissy” Zajac, Tim Richards, and Sean Douglas. He was affectionately called “PawPaw” by his ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, a title he wore with pride and affection. Jim’s family also includes his brother Paul (Gaby) Richards, his nephew Brandon Richards, his lifelong friend Les Self, and Sherry Norris, his devoted chauffer.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Kristi Richards, and his parents, James and Mary Richards.
