James Thomas Zimmerman, Jr., “Jimmy,” age 71, passed away on March 3, 2026. He was born on June 12, 1954 to the late Sara Zimmerman and James Thomas Zimmerman, Sr. in Landstuhl, Germany.
He attended Overton High School, participating in ROTC, and went on to study at Middle Tennessee State University.
Jimmy was known for his sharp wit and the personality of a classic “grumpy old man,” a title he carried proudly, though those who knew him best understood the big heart behind it. He had an incredible mind for designing, building, and repairing anything that needed fixing.
He had a lifelong passion for technology and creating things with his hands. Jimmy enjoyed building computers, experimenting with 3D printing, and even teaching himself 3D design so he could bring his ideas to life. He loved flying drones and had a deep interest in aviation, once holding his private pilot’s license. His hobbies also included shooting, collecting knives, and spending time working outdoors.
Jimmy traveled throughout his career, working in many parts of the world helping build and create wherever his work took him.
At home, Jimmy enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including watching soap operas with his beloved wife of 49 years. More than anything, he treasured spending time with his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and joy.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
Jimmy is survived by his loving wife, Kim Zimmerman; his daughters, Tiffany Zimmerman and Kelsey Rice (Rob); his grandchildren, Broc Cine, Colton Rice, Raven Rice, and Arlen Rice; and his brother, John Zimmerman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, in the Chapel of Hendersonville Funeral Home (353 E. Main St., Hendersonville, TN 37075).
