Loretta R. Staton

May 6, 1938 — August 27, 2025

Loretta Roberson Staton

(1938-2025)

Loretta Roberson Staton, beloved wife of Dr. Fred Glenn Staton and mother of two children, Dr. Carla Staton Cushman (Charlie) and Fred Glenn Staton, Jr. (Lisa); three grandchildren, Robert Carson Blackwell (Jamie), Mary Candace Blackwell Hood, and Johnathan Ryan Staton (Heather); and 10 great-grandchildren, Carly Blackwell, Reece Aitken, Sonny Blackwell, Danny Staton, Scout Hood, Wyatt Staton, Blaise Blackwell, Emmie Blackwell, Kylie Kitchens , and Hayden Jackson  passed away following an extended illness on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, leaving behind a rich heritage of faith and love.

Loretta was born in 1938 in Danville, Virginia, to Florence Fox Roberson and Alvin Wayne Roberson. She was both fascinated by and proud of her Cherokee heritage, spending countless hours researching her family lineage.

Loretta took great satisfaction in her professional life, having served as a secretary/bookkeeper at Hartsville Senior High School, Hartsville Vocational High School, and North Hartsville Elementary School (all in South Carolina). After moving to Tennessee, Loretta joined the staff of Indian Lake Elementary School in Hendersonville, serving as bookkeeper under the leadership of the late Dr. Robert Halpin and the late Mrs. Jewell McGhee.

Outside her work role, Loretta was a devoted wife, mother, and Granny. She cherished large family gatherings, whether to celebrate birthdays, holidays, or “just because.” Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She was childlike in her excitement as her family gathered around her Christmas tree each year on Christmas Eve to enjoy many long-established holiday traditions.

Traveling with Fred provided endless tales of adventure and fun. Loretta always kept a suitcase packed and stored in their car for the many spontaneous road trips they would take.

Loretta endeared herself to family and friends through her beautiful smile, quick wit, and infectious laughter. She was admired for her kind, loving spirit, trustworthiness, and ability to guard her friends’ most trusted secrets. She was a fierce prayer warrior who prayed with confidence that God always heard her prayers. She prayed for family members by name each night before she went to sleep. Loretta loved God, believed His word, and now dances with Him among the angels who have gone before.

Loretta was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Fox Roberson; father, Alvin Wayne Roberson; brother, Edward Roberson; sister, Mary Rodney; sister-in-law, Varna Roberson; brother-in-law, Curtis Rodney, and nephew, Jody Rodney.

On September 8, 2025, Loretta and Fred would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary—a milestone they were both looking forward to sharing.
