Martha Nuckols

Martha Nuckols, age 83, passed away on August 11, 2025, in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Martha was a loving, dedicated, and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Martha is preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty years, Doug Nuckols, and her parents, Henry and Mary Waite Ulrich.

She is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Steve) Albers and Linda (Geoff) Thoren; five grandchildren, Ethan Albers, Haley (Jordan) Sharp, Hunter (Tali) Thoren, Megan (Tyler) White, and Blake Thoren; three sweet great-grandchildren, Isaiah Sharp, Levi Sharp, and Ella Thoren; sister, Mary Louise (Floyd) Foster; brother, Larry (Brenda) Ulrich; and many nieces and nephews.

Martha was born on January 28, 1942, in Albany, New York to Hank and Mary Ulrich. She grew up in Westbury, New York and moved to Naperville, Illinois in 1961. Martha met Doug at North Central College, and they married on June 27, 1964.

They lived in St. Charles, Illinois and later moved to Homewood, Illinois where they raised their two daughters.

Martha was initially an elementary school teacher, a favorite substitute teacher for many years and ended her career as a reading recovery specialist.

She was known for Christmas theme gifts, sewing, playing games, doing puzzles, baking sugar cookies and walking. She loved making connections with people and never forgot a birthday.

In retirement, Doug and Martha moved to Hazelhurst, Wisconsin and eventually The Villages, Florida. Most recently, they moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee to be near family.

Martha lived with Type I diabetes for fifty-seven years and remained committed to maintaining her health throughout her life. With this, her family asks that donations made in lieu of flowers to the American Diabetes Association in her memory.

Martha will be put to rest with a celebration of life in Illinois at a later date.
