Ruby (Potter) Felker, 93, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Ruby was the second of three children, born on August 10, 1932, in Nashville, Tennessee to Burr and Beatrice (Gentry) Potter.
Ruby began taking piano lessons when she was in elementary school and became very proficient in it. She was a lifelong member of Grace Church. As a teenager, she was piano accompanist for the Grace Church Men’s Quartet, accompanying them for church services and radio broadcasts. Ruby held many positions in the church; Sunday School teacher, NYPS President, Missionary Society, and was Junior Fellowship Director for the Tennessee District.
After graduating from Hume Fogg High School, Ruby worked for a few years prior to attending Trevecca Nazarene College. While at Trevecca, Ruby sang in the Acapella Choir and began taking organ lessons. Upon graduating from Trevecca, Ruby went on to George Peabody College earning her master’s degree in Elementary Education. She began teaching elementary school in 1957 and taught in the Metro Nashville school system for 20 years.
Ruby was a woman of faith, who served her Lord. Her most important role was that of wife and mother. Ruby married the love of her life Cecil Felker in 1962. They were blessed with two daughters and while being a “stay at home mom” she taught piano and organ lessons. After retirement, Ruby and Cecil traveled in their motor home for over 20 years. While on these travels, Ruby kept a daily journal of their trip including the names of towns and the people they met along the way. As Cecil said, “I drove and Ruby wrote”. Ruby was an excellent cook and host. She will always be remembered for hosting her Sunday dinners of roast beef, her love of strawberry ice cream, and anything with chocolate.
Ruby’s love, laughter, and humor will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Ruby is preceded in death by her parents Burr and Beatrice Potter, her brother and sister-in-law Milton (Geri) Potter, brother-in-law Jay Mick, and sisters and brothers-in-laws Virginia (Earl) McIntosh and Lillian (Les) Thomas. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years Cecil Felker, daughters Nancy (Jason Klein) Felker and Kelly (Andrew) Zachary, sister Burdene Mick, nieces Susan (Ralph) Roeper, Lisa (David) Johnson, and Laurel Thomas; nephews Phillip (Shelly) Potter, and Dale Potter along with numerous other extended family and friends.
